The rain had not fallen in this city for several hundred years. It must be said that it is located in the Atacama Desert, often presented as one of the driest in the world, and one of the oldest. NASA tests its vehicles before sending them to Mars. It is home to a hyper-arid area in which no rain has been recorded in the last 500 years. But that has changed since 2015. And against all odds, the rain fell on March 25 and August 9, 2015 and June 7, 2017 had devastating effects on the local flora.
Until then, there were very few animals or plants, but an important ecosystem made up of many micro-organisms. And the rain was not followed by the blossoming of flowers or the blossoming of several animal species, on the contrary: it did not settle the situation. According to an international team of biologists, this precipitation has killed most of the specific microbial life of the region. This phenomenon of long periods of drought, followed by short wet conditions, would also be responsible for nitrate deposition on Mars.
