Charlie Chaplin told this anecdote to a Chicago Herald journalist in 1915. He made himself incognito in the contest, disguised as “Charlot”, but was not selected for the final. However, the location of this adventure is unclear: it would have occurred in San Francisco but other sources also mention Monte Carlo. In another newspaper article, it is stated that he lived an identical situation in London, where he will finish 27th.
